To enjoy computer work or gaming comfortably, it is important to choose a mouse that matches the size of the hand and the way it is used.
If the mouse size does not fit, it can put extra strain on the hand and fingers, making it easier to get tired during long hours of work and feel less comfortable to operate.
With over 20 years of PC experience and using a computer 8 to 12 hours a day, I have used more than 15 different mice.
Based on that experience, this article will clearly explain the types and features of mouse sizes and the key points for choosing the right one.
- It is important to choose a mouse size that matches the size of the hand and how it is used
- Mouse sizes are mainly “Small (S)”, “Medium (M)”, and “Large (L)”
- Small mice are lightweight and convenient to carry, but may not be suitable for long-term use
- Medium mice fit most people and are well-balanced
- Large mice are stable and suitable for long hours of work or multi-functional operations
- Try out the mouse in a store to check the size and operability
- Models with function buttons are more common in medium to large sizes

About Mouse Sizes
This section explains the key points for choosing a mouse size and the features of each type.
Comparison of Small (S), Medium (M), and Large (L) Sizes
Mouse sizes are generally divided into three types: Small (S), Medium (M), and Large (L).
The image shows, from left to right, Small (S), Medium (M), and Large (L).
Before showing images of actually holding the mouse, let’s look at the size of my hand.
Without knowing this, it is hard to compare the images or imagine the size in relation to your own hand.
My hand size is the average of 184mm, which is the average for adult men.
The measurement is from the wrist crease to the tip of the middle finger. The average hand sizes by gender are as follows:
Male average: 183.4mm
Female average: 169.3mm
Now, let’s actually hold mice of different sizes. The grip style is unified as palm grip.
Size | Length | Main Features |
---|---|---|
Small | 85–100 mm | ・Easy to carry and usable in many situations ・For people with small hands ・Suitable for claw or fingertip grip ・Lightweight and less tiring |
Medium | 100–120 mm | ・Fits standard hand sizes ・Well-balanced and fits most people ・Usable for a wide range of purposes |
Large | 120–135 mm | ・For people with large hands ・Stable ・Suitable for palm grip ・Good for long hours of work |
Mouse size standards differ by manufacturer and product, and there is no clear definition by exact numbers.
Some models from Elecom have S, M, L sizes, and after researching various mouse sizes, the classification in the table above was made.
For an average male hand size and using the most common palm grip, the medium mouse fits best.
The click position is also easy to use.
With a small mouse, the fingertips stick out a little, so clicking is done with the pads of the fingers.
With a large mouse, the fingertips cannot cover the end, but there is no problem with the click position.
The main deciding factors are hand size and whether the mouse will be used for long hours or carried around with a laptop.
Small mice are suitable for people with small hands or those who prioritize portability, and are convenient for use with laptops.
Medium mice fit most hands and are well-balanced, making them less tiring even during long hours of work.
Large mice are recommended for people with large hands or those who want a solid grip, and are also suitable for precise operations or gaming.
If function buttons for assigning shortcuts are needed, M or L sizes are more common.
If even more function buttons are needed, a physically larger mouse (L size) is easier to equip with more buttons.
Relationship Between Hand Size and Mouse Size
The most important thing when choosing a mouse is to select a size that matches the size of the hand.
If a person with small hands uses a large mouse, clicking or scrolling may become difficult, and moving the mouse can feel stressful.
Extra force may be applied to the hand or fingers, which can lead to mouse tendonitis or finger pain if continued for long periods.
If a person with large hands uses a small mouse, the fingers may feel cramped, and long-term use can cause wrist or finger pain.
However, while palm grip may not fit, fingertip grip can be comfortable, so the comfort also changes depending on the way the mouse is held.
Basically, choosing a mouse size that matches the length of the hand allows for a natural grip and easier fine control.
Find the Size That Suits You
To find a mouse that fits the hand and usage, the most reliable way is to actually try it at an electronics store.
It is hard to know the feel, fit, and size just from photos or descriptions on online shopping sites, but by actually touching the mouse, it is possible to check the click feel, wheel ease, weight, and other details.
In large electronics stores, there is usually a mouse section in the PC area, with about 50 mice available to try.
There, check the fit, ease of movement, and button press by actually holding the mouse.
This helps prevent mismatches or regrets after purchase, making it easier to make a satisfying choice.
If the purpose is to check the size, note the mouse size (mainly the length), and by looking at the specifications, it is easier to imagine the size even when shopping online.
Especially for those who use a computer for long hours or feel strain on the wrist or fingers, it is recommended to check the fit and operability before choosing.
Small Size Mouse
This section explains about small size mice.
Features and Recommended Uses of Small Size Mouse
Small size mice are especially recommended for people with small hands or those who prioritize portability.
The compact shape makes it easy to put in a bag or pocket without getting in the way, and it is convenient to use even when out or on business trips.
Also, because it is lightweight, it is less tiring to use for long periods and easy to perform fine operations.
Even in places with limited workspace, such as cafes or libraries, small mice can be used comfortably without getting in the way.
When carrying a computer for presentations or meetings, a lightweight small mouse does not feel like extra baggage.
This type is also recommended for business people or students who move around a lot, or for those looking for a sub-mouse for carrying around while using a larger mouse at home.
On the other hand, people with large hands may find it difficult to hold.
I used a small mouse for working on a computer outside, but the comfort changes greatly depending on how the mouse is held.
Because the mouse is small compared to the hand size, holding it with the whole palm (palm grip) feels quite uncomfortable, and the click button and finger positions do not match, making operation difficult.
However, if using a fingertip grip, supporting the mouse only with the fingertips, it is light and comfortable to operate, so the way it is held makes a big difference.
Some people may have preferences for grip style, so check if the grip style suits you before deciding whether to include small size mice as an option.
Advantages of Small Size Mouse
The advantages of small size mice are as follows:
- Lightweight and convenient to carry
Small mice are very light and compact, so carrying them with a laptop is not a burden.
They do not take up space in a bag, making them easy to use for work on the go, business trips, or travel. - Fits people with small hands
The compact size makes it easy for people with small hands to grip naturally and operate comfortably.
Fingers can easily reach the buttons and wheel, so there is less strain on the hand or fingers. - Does not take up desk space
Small mice do not take up much space, so even when placed with a laptop, documents, or other peripherals, the desk does not feel cramped and workspace can be used efficiently.
Even on small tables in cafes or libraries, there is enough room to work and smooth hand movement is possible. - Easy to operate with fingertips
The compact design allows for light and quick operation with just the fingertips, making it easy to move the cursor precisely and quickly. - Usable in a wide range of situations
Because of the portability and easy-to-handle size, small mice are strong in various situations such as business, studying at home, working outside, or using while traveling.
There are many situations outside where the desk is small and only a little space is left after placing a laptop.
In fact, there have been times when a large mouse was difficult to operate on a small cafe or hotel table.
In such cases, a large mouse may not have enough space to move, making it impossible to move the cursor.
Although the laptop’s touchpad can be used, since a mouse is used for better operability, it is meaningless if it cannot be moved.
For those who often encounter such situations, a small mouse is suitable.
Disadvantages of Small Size Mouse
The disadvantages of small size mice are as follows:
- May cause fatigue during long-term use (depending on grip style)
Small mice are hard to support with the whole palm, so operation tends to be done only with the fingertips.
Therefore, using it for a long time can put strain on the hand or fingers, causing muscle tension or fatigue. - Difficult to use for people with large hands
If the mouse is too small for the hand size, it is hard to use a natural grip (palm grip), and the fingers are always cramped.
If this continues, it can put extra strain on the wrist or arm, leading to operation mistakes or fatigue. - Often lacks function buttons
Because the body is compact, function buttons are basically not included.
Forward/back buttons are often present, but do not expect additional buttons. - Not suitable for high-precision aiming or operation (especially FPS games)
Since operation is mainly with the fingertips, it is hard to maintain stable movement in games that require high-precision aiming or quick viewpoint changes, such as FPS.
In situations that require delicate mouse operation, movement may become unstable or aiming may be off, affecting performance during play.
Whether small mice are tiring for long-term use depends greatly on the individual.
I use a computer for about 8–12 hours a day and used a small mouse with fingertip grip, but did not get tired at all.
With palm grip, the fingertips do not match the click position and clicking is done with the pads of the fingers.
If this continues, it may become tiring, but this can be avoided by changing the grip style, so “small mouse = always tiring” is not necessarily true.
Regarding function buttons, at least side buttons for forward/back in browsers are desirable, but many small mice have these, so this is not a problem.
However, models with additional function buttons for assigning functions or shortcuts are rarely seen in small mice, so those who work more efficiently with function keys may find them unsuitable.
For FPS games, I have tried them too, but small mice are hard to use.
During combat scenes, more force is applied, and with a small mouse, the force is directed inward with the fingers, using muscles not usually used.
In this case, using it for long periods can cause fatigue or even hand pain.
On the other hand, with M or L size, even if force is applied, it can be done naturally, so it is less tiring.
Medium Size Mouse
This section explains about medium size mice.
Features and Recommended Uses of Medium Size Mouse
Medium size mice are easy to use for many users regardless of hand size or grip style.
They offer a good balance between work efficiency and comfort, and can handle a wide range of tasks from fine control to quick movements, making them especially suitable for long hours of computer work or office tasks.
Compared to small mice, medium mice can be gripped with the whole hand, making them less tiring for long-term use.
Clicking and cursor control are also more stable, so they are suitable for tasks that require fine movements, such as design, illustration, spreadsheet work, or gaming.
Many manufacturers offer medium size as standard models, so there are many choices in design and features.
Advantages of Medium Size Mouse
The advantages of medium size mice are as follows:
- Balanced size that fits most hands
Medium size mice have a just-right size that fits many hand types.
They are versatile and comfortable for a wide range of users, from those with small hands to those with large hands. - Compatible with various grip styles
Regardless of hand size or finger length, most people can use them comfortably, so they can be used without worrying about grip style.
They are flexible for different grip styles and are not affected by personal preferences.
It is also easy to change grip style according to usage or posture. - Highly versatile for daily use, business, gaming, and creative work
With a good balance of operability and comfort, they can be used for a wide range of purposes, from office work to gaming or creative tasks.
They fit the hand well, so they are less tiring for long-term use and easy to handle even in games that require fine mouse control.
They are also suitable for business uses that require accurate cursor control, such as office work or document creation.
From my experience using various mice from small to large, medium size is the easiest to hold.
Because it is in the middle, it is highly versatile and well-balanced, so for those who are “not sure which size to choose…” or “want to be more particular about the mouse but don’t know where to start…”, starting with a medium mouse is recommended.
If you start seeking high functionality, multi-functionality, or more function buttons, large mice are physically bigger and easier to equip with various features, so you will naturally look at large mice.
Disadvantages of Medium Size Mouse
The disadvantages of medium size mice are as follows:
- Not very suitable for carrying around
Because they are larger and heavier than small mice, they are somewhat bulky to carry in a bag.
However, compared to large mice, they are still portable, so occasional carrying is not a problem.
Medium size mice are well-balanced, so there are no major disadvantages.
However, being versatile and well-balanced means they are made to fit everyone, so in other words, they are not specialized for anything.
If you want a mouse with more features or buttons to suit your usage or comfort, there may be physical size limitations.
Large Size Mouse
This section explains about large size mice.
Features and Recommended Uses of Large Size Mouse
Large size mice can be held with the whole palm, so even during long hours of work, there is less strain on the fingers or wrist, making them less tiring.
They are especially suitable for people with large hands or those who use a palm grip.
Also, the buttons and wheel are often larger, making them easier to operate.
Furthermore, because of their weight and size, they are stable and are easier to use for tasks or games that require larger movements rather than fine control.
On the other hand, they are not very suitable for carrying around, so they are recommended for stationary use.
Advantages of Large Size Mouse
The advantages of large size mice are as follows:
- Fits people with large hands
The large body size makes it comfortable for people with large hands, allowing for a natural grip.
The whole palm can be used for operation, providing a stable feel. - Comfortable for palm grip
Large mice are very suitable for palm grip, where the whole palm is placed on the mouse.
This grip style does not put unnecessary force on the wrist or fingers, making it less tiring even during long hours of use.
It is especially suitable for those who use a mouse for long hours at work. - Stable and less tiring for long-term use
Because of the size and weight, the mouse does not wobble easily, and the hand is stable even during precise operations.
Also, using the whole hand to move the mouse prevents strain from concentrating on one point, making it suitable for long hours of work. - Many models with multiple functions and function buttons
Because of the large size, it is easier to equip not only side buttons but also multiple function buttons, increasing convenience for web browsing, work, or gaming.
With dedicated software, customization options are expanded, improving operability and comfort according to the intended use.
With small mice, applying unnecessary force can affect posture and cause fatigue during long hours of work.
In that respect, with a large mouse, the palm rests firmly on the mouse, so unnecessary force is not needed, making it easier to maintain a natural posture and use comfortably for long periods.
Also, there are models with various functions and many function buttons, so those who want such features or buttons should choose a large mouse.
Disadvantages of Large Size Mouse
The disadvantages of large size mice are as follows:
- Difficult to use for people with small hands
Large mice are comfortable for people with large hands, but for those with small hands, they may feel less comfortable to operate.
If the mouse is too large for the hand, it may be hard to reach the buttons or wheel, or hard to apply force, making operation difficult.
If the benefits of the size are not felt, it may even reduce accuracy or increase discomfort. - Uses more desk space
Because of the large size, the movement range required for use is also larger, so enough workspace is needed.
On compact desks or when used with a laptop, it may be hard to handle and may hit surrounding devices. - Inconvenient to carry
Because of the large size and weight, it takes up space in a bag or storage, and is not suitable for use outside.
It is hard to fit in a small pouch or case, and if put together with other items, it may get scratched.
I once tried carrying a large mouse, but there are only a few gadget pouches that can store it, and it was hard to take in and out.
Also, in a backpack pocket, the mouse rubs against the fabric due to shaking, which is not good.
