Features of AMD Ryzen 7000 Series Processors

Architecture evolved from “Zen 3” to “Zen 4”

The CPU architecture has changed from Zen 3 to Zen 4, and the process for making CPU cores has been refined from 7nm to 5nm.

This allows more transistors to be packed into the same area, making it easier to improve power efficiency and achieve higher clock speeds.

 

Additionally, with enhancements to the front end and improvements to the arithmetic units, Zen 4 achieves about 10-15% higher IPC (instructions per clock) on average compared to Zen 3.

 

Addition of Integrated GPU

In Zen 4, the process and functions of the I/O die, which handles input and output, have also been updated, and an integrated GPU is now included.

 

In previous Zen 3 desktop product lines, only the “G” models (e.g., Ryzen 5 5600G, Ryzen 7 5700G) had integrated GPUs.

In other words, generally, there was no integrated GPU, and only a few models ending with “G” had one.

 

In contrast, from Zen 4 (Ryzen 7000 series and later), most models now come with an integrated GPU, and models without an integrated GPU are distinguished by an “F” at the end (e.g., Ryzen 7 8700F).

In summary, most models now have an integrated GPU, and only a few models ending with “F” do not, requiring a separate graphics card.

 

No Change in Core and Thread Count

Compared to the Ryzen 5000 series with the same model numbers, there is no change in the number of cores and threads.

Although the numbers have not changed, the clock speeds have increased by 0.3 to 0.7 GHz in all models, so overall performance has improved.

 

Also, with the evolution from Zen 3 to Zen 4, internal processing not listed in the CPU specs has been optimized, resulting in benchmark scores that are about 20-30% higher overall.

 

Socket Type and Chipset: “AM5” and “600/800 Series”

The Ryzen 7000 series uses the “AM5” socket and is compatible with the “600/800 series” chipsets.

 

The Ryzen 5000 series used “AM4”, so the socket type has changed.

Because the socket shape is physically different, the CPU will not fit if the wrong combination is used, so be careful when choosing a CPU and motherboard.

 

Memory: Supports DDR5 up to 5200 MT/s, Maximum Capacity 256GB

There are three main changes to memory:

  • Memory standard changed from DDR4 to DDR5
  • Maximum supported memory speed increased from 3200 MT/s (51.2 GB/s) to 5200 MT/s (83.2 GB/s)
  • Maximum memory capacity increased from 128 GB to 256 GB

For AMD Ryzen series, supported memory speed differs between two and four memory sticks, with two sticks supporting faster speeds at 5200 MT/s.

Also, 83.2 GB/s is the speed in dual-channel configuration; with a single stick, the speed is halved, so it is better to use two sticks as a pair when building a system.

 

This allows for improved performance in tasks where memory bandwidth is important, such as gaming, video editing, and 3D rendering.

 

However, supported memory speed depends not only on the CPU but also on the motherboard specifications, so to achieve the maximum 5200 MT/s, be sure to check the compatible chipset and motherboard specs.

There are cases where memory speed can improve game FPS by 5% or 10%, so if there is room in the budget, choosing good memory is a good idea!

 

Supports PCI Express 5.0

From the Ryzen 7000 series, PCI Express 5.0 is supported.

It has twice the bandwidth of the previous generation (PCIe 4.0), and is designed to accommodate future high-speed GPUs and SSDs, but in practice, it will mainly be used for NVMe SSDs.

However, overall, models with “3D” at the end have lower cost performance.

These models have a large 3D Cache, which improves gaming performance, but the increased cache size raises the cost, resulting in higher prices.
